Canonical has officially released Ubuntu 9.10, codenamed Karmic Koala, on 29th October 2009. This is their 11th release. The release cycle of Karmic was different this time with only one Beta. There are a lot of improvements over Jaunty.
It uses GNOME 2.28.1 as desktop environment, EXT4 file system, 2.6.31.1 Linux kernel, Xsplash, new art work and more.
New improvements include:

Improved Boot time
EXT4 as the default file system over EXT3
New boot loader. Grub2 is used for EXT4 support
New X based splash screen
New splash theme
New login screen
New wallpapers
New Gnome themes and icon theme
Home compression
And many more.
