Ubuntu "Jaunty". Fastest Live Ubuntu yet?
Ubuntu 9.04 codenamed "Jaunty Jackalope" has been put for download in beta stage. The aim for release to reduce the boot time. And they have been successful to an extent. With reduction in boot time there are some other major changes as well. The first you see is when you boot the Jaunty and there is no default Ubuntu boot status bar but a very tiny bar. Something that I was not used to. But it did not take as much time to boot as some previous released. It took just as much time to boot from Live CD as my installed XP takes to boot from HDD.
Once booted, the default desktop is clean brown. Like it better than the Hardy default desktop. It was a cd version so just with basic required daily applications. But as Ubuntu custom, whole lot can be installed from package manager.
The default desktop environment is Gnome and it comes with latest 2.26 release. Evolution this time has got the ability to import the Outlook file format and this feature will be liked by many.
To connect to internet is a hassle free and those who think windows is easy, they should try this. My adsl connection was as easy as 1-2-3. Just edit the connection to enter the connection name, username and password. That is done. Now just connect to internet and enjoy the safe and secure surfing experience. Surfing was so fast, I could hardly believe my eyes when pages loaded. They loaded at least 30-40% faster than the installed xp. Only common thing with xp and Jaunty was the browser, FireFox.
Another thing that I could see was that it detected the wireless wifi card that Hardy or Intrepid did not. At least they did not enable it by default and said no wireless extension.
As with the boot, the halting time was pretty less and it halted the system in less than 20 seconds flat.
Something that I would like to mention here: The test laptop that I used was atleast couple of years old IBM Thinkpad R50 with Intel Centrino M 1.8G processor , 512 RAM and on board video with shared memory.
I can say now......Fastest Live Ubuntu YET.
