BANGALORE, INDIA: Accelerated 3D graphics can now be brought into computing, thanks to the new software from Google, christened O3D. The new software straight out of the Google Labs is a browser plug in, currently compatible with Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, and Chrome that works on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

The Labs' scientists are said to be looking at building the technology directly into browsers at a later stage.

According CNet, the new O3D lets developers' Web-based JavaScript programs tap directly into a computer's graphics chip. This, in fact, could mean that it has in store better games and other applications. The new browser plug in feature is dubbed as a significant effort that has the capability to provide computing strengths to web applications.

On the belief that multiple 3D interfaces will be supported in browsers of the future, the company is seriously looking at that space. Google had been working on the open-source plug-in software for the past two years. According to the report, the plug in is intended less for regular users of the Web and more for programmers trying to explore what can be done with 3D on the Web.

However, CNet says the search behemoth is not the only one aspiring for 3D web. Many a player, besides Google, is looking at this option. It is being said that even Yahoo, and Microsoft are tapping into more potential in this space. Meanwhile, the report added that other players like Mozilla and the Khronos Group had also forayed into 3D Web interface by logging on to efforts to build their own playground.
